The University of the Visayas (UV) is a private university system in the province of Cebu. It was founded as the Visayan Institute (VI) by Don Vicente Gullas in 1919. The institute was granted university status and was renamed as the University of the Visayas in 1948, thus becoming the first university in Cebu. At present, the university has its main campus along Colon Street in Cebu City and has eight satellite campuses in the province—Banilad, Minglanilla, Toledo, Pardo, Mandaue, Danao, Dalaguete, and Compostela.
The Main Campus offers undergraduate and graduate courses under eight college units: Education; Arts and Sciences; Criminal Justice Education; Computer Studies; Maritime Studies; Engineering and Architecture; Business Administration; and, Law. The Business Administration department is recognized as a Center of Development (COD) by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). Additionally, the Business Administration, Nursing, Political Science, and Education programs have Level III accreditation statuses from the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA). Aside from higher education programs, the campus has a Senior High School (SHS) department providing the Academic and the Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL) tracks.
